General Info

Tribe of Gladys was founded by one person simply because she could not get African Dance and Samba out of her head! Inspired by Bristol based teacher Rachel Achol De Garang of African Sambistas and the one and only Tribe of Doris summer school, the style of dance taught is a fusion of all these influences. “Rachel gave to me not only the steps and moves of her African dance but more than this, she gave me the greatest gift of all – the belief that dance is open to all people and that if you can feel your heart beat then you can dance.”

Now happily, the Tribe of Gladys is growing as a collaborative organisation and has recently teamed up with Sheffield Samba Band to form the Gladys Sambistas. Money raised by Tribe of Gladys is used to fund the future of the project: to pay for guest teachers and expenses; to hire drummers; to put on events and raise money for charities. We have so far raised money for Unicef, Assist and The Disaster Relief Fund (Pakistani Flood Appeal). All classes are open to men and women.

Beginners African Style Dance Workshops(Jo)

This class is for all levels, all shapes and sizes and all are welcome. Come and shake the blues away to African style dance.

It is difficult to define African Dance and even national organisations have trouble in this (ADAD). Generally speaking the term refers to Sub-Saharan Africa and so necessarily acknowledges the incredibly rich diversity and variety of dance in such a HUGE area! Good old Wikipedia has made an attempt at the impossible and tells us that “...African dance utilizes the concepts of polyrhythm: shoulders, chest, pelvis, arms, legs etc.,...move with different rhythms in the music”. BUT don't let that put you off! You don't even need to possess the mystical skill of 'being co-ordinated'! The main thing is that you turn up with an open mind and some spare energy, ready to dance to an eclectic range of movements from the Sudan, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Togo, Senegal. These are run on Thursday evenings at Ethio-Cubano Restaurant where requested, so please email if you would like to try an hour's workshop.

Master Drummer (Tongesayi Gumbo)

Dancer, choreographer, producer, drummer and singer from Zimbabwe, Tongesayi drums for classes on some weeks - watch the hot news space. Tongesayi has been Choreographer for Zimbabwe's National Dance Troupe, Artistic Director of KHULA African Arts, and Director of Mpopoma Dance Ensemble. Tongesayi teaches African dance styles and drumming skills in both junior and secondary schools (07760447308).These classes are run as workshops on Thursdays at Ethio-Cubano Restaurant, watch the hot news space.
